Unveiling the Untold Stories of Historical Sinop Prison

An event titled “Literature, History, and Music Evenings”, organized by Sinop University in collaboration with the Youth and Sports Provincial Directorate, and now in its 22nd edition, shed light on the Historical Sinop Prison, known as the “Alcatraz of Anatolia.”

The event, held at the Genç Ofis located in the Tersane district, was attended by Chief Public Prosecutor Mesut Pektaş, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Muhitdin Yılmaz, Secretary General Şenol Metin, academic and administrative staff, students, and a large number of citizens.

Dr. Adem Orakçı, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Education, moderated the event, with Associate Professor Cenk Demir from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences serving as the speaker. In his presentation, Cenk Demir shared important information about the period of Sinop before the construction of the prison. Referring to historical documents, Demir mentioned that prisoners were held in different locations in the city before the construction of the Sinop Historical Prison began with the laying of the foundation on October 29, 1887.

During the program, Cenk Demir elaborated on the status of prisoners in Sinop, their profiles, and the types of crimes committed by inmates in the prison. Throughout the event, Demir shared many documents and findings about the history of Sinop and the construction of the Historical Prison, including official correspondence and sketches he found in the archives in Kastamonu.

At the conclusion of his presentation, Cenk Demir provided information about the evacuation process of the Historical Sinop Prison, its transformation into a museum, and the restoration works carried out.

During the event, members of the Music Student Community, Şilan Taşan, Ümmügülsüm Karakaş, Yücel Yılmazer, Utku Eren Altınay, and Basri Sever, delivered emotional performances that captivated the audience. At the end of the event, certificates of appreciation were presented to the speakers and members of the Music Student Community.
